Statement of U.S. Businesses in Support of Global Conservation

As companies operating in the U.S. and internationally, we recognize that we cannot be successful unless our customers, employees, suppliers, and other stakeholders are secure and prosperous.  This goal can only be achieved if the natural resources on which people and commerce depend are sustained.

Many of these resources, however—such as forests, reefs, wetlands, wildlife, and fish stocks—are quickly disappearing.  Nature’s ability to provide people with freshwater, healthy soils, protection against natural disasters, sources of medicines, and food is in serious jeopardy.  Given that world population is expected to exceed nine billion by mid-century, the situation is even more dire.  The U.S. National Intelligence Council has also concluded that scarcities of water, arable land, and food will increasingly be the causes of international conflict this century.

Natural resource conservation around the world supports our businesses by:

  • Optimizing our ability to provide for the needs of a growing global population;
  • Minimizing future risks to supply chains, infrastructure, and market access;
  • Leveling the playing field for responsible companies that must compete with companies unsustainably exploiting natural resources;
  • Improving the well-being of our customers, employees, suppliers, and other stakeholders;
  • Contributing to a more peaceful and prosperous world.

We believe the U.S. should take a leadership role in addressing accelerating environmental degradation around the world.  We call on the U.S. government to use its scientific, strategic, and diplomatic resources to develop a comprehensive, science-based global conservation strategy; identify international conservation goals and benchmarks of success; and encourage other nations to work with us to implement the strategy and achieve its goals.
